The league’s stance has been echoed by several major corporations and other sports leagues, which have been among the most vocal supporters of the rule.
The NFL said the rule is “designed to protect players and the game, while also protecting the public’s health and safety.”
A few of the most common shirtless jerseys include those worn by football players, basketball players and basketball coaches, while others are worn by athletes in other sports such as baseball and hockey.
The league has faced criticism for the rule in the past, including from some players and coaches, who say the rule hurts the image of the game.
The rule also has been challenged in court.
In 2011, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit struck down a federal ban on the uniform.
